Story of Richard “Pete” Peterson’s P-39 Flight in training prior to deployment to Europe.
This is one of the most amazing aviation stories I have ever heard. Mark Stepelton had told me about this flight at the last 357th FG reunion. He said he and several other pilots tried to wake Pete up by calling on the radio and attempting to rock his aircraft by bumping his wings with their aircraft wings. They finally were so low on fuel, they had to abandon him and head toward their destination – leaving Pete on his own. Merle has graciously furnished the letter Pete wrote him about the incident.
