Bud and great friend Joe Engle. Joe worked with Bud at Edwards AFB. As a young Captain, Joe flew the X-15 to an altitude of more than 50 miles above ground, qualifying for astronaut wings. He was selected to become a NASA astronaut the following year and is the only person to fly both the X-15 and the Space Shuttle.
